Paywalls that convert (without feeling mean)

Social proof, soft gates, yearly defaults, and clear tier contrast — from real A/B winners.

Explained like for kids

A paywall is the ticket booth. If it’s rude, empty, or confusing, people leave. If it shows why others loved the show, lets you peek first, and makes the best seat obvious, more people buy.

Examples

Each example has a kid-friendly “why,” then a clear Don't and Do with a real UI mock so you can see the difference.

Reviews beat empty promo copy

Like for kids: “We’re awesome!” is bragging. “Maya gave us 5 stars” is a friend vouching for you.

Don’t

Generic marketing line on the paywall

Low trust. Sounds like an ad, not proof.

Control — promo line

“The #1 running app for serious athletes.”

Go Premium

Do

Real review + star rating on the paywall

Runtastic: +44% paid subscriptions from social proof.

Winner — social proof · Runtastic +44%

★★★★★ Maya T.

“Finally stuck to my training plan for 3 months.”

Soft gate before the hard wall

Like for kids: Movie trailers exist so you know it’s worth the ticket. Let people watch 10 seconds first.

Don’t

Hard block the moment they tap premium content

No taste of value. Drop-off spikes (Peptalk’s problem).

Control — hard block

Do

Preview briefly, then ask to continue

Peptalk’s soft paywall variant beat the hard intermediate screen.

Yearly as the default

Like for kids: If the lunch menu puts the weekly meal deal on the front and daily options behind “see more,” more kids pick the deal.

Don’t

Monthly and yearly side-by-side with equal weight

Decision friction. Monthly wins by default even when yearly is better value.

Control — equal plans

Monthly

$9.99

Yearly

$59.99

Do

Lead with yearly; “View all plans” for monthly

Mojo: +15–20% share of yearly subscriptions.

Winner — yearly first · Mojo +20%

$59.99/year

Pro badges in the product

Like for kids: A lock on a door is scary if you didn’t know the room was VIP. A small “Pro” sticker warns you earlier — and makes upgrading make sense.

Don’t

Surprise paywall with no in-app hints

Feels like a trick. Free users don’t understand what Pro unlocks.

Control — surprise lock

Unexpected paywall!

Do

Badge Pro-only features in the UI

Mobbin: +35% free-to-paid with badges alone — awareness without other changes.

Remember these

  • Put real reviews / ratings on the paywall.
  • Soft gate: let people taste content before the hard ask.
  • Default to yearly with “view all plans” as escape.
  • Make higher tiers visually clearer — and badge Pro features in-product.
